Black men are disproportionately affected by lung cancer – at least 30% higher than among white men – despite having similar smoking rates. UnityPoint Health is offering the Black Men’s Health Series. Their first event took place on November 4, 2021. It was titled “Breathe Easier: Virtual Education Event.” The Keynote Speaker was Dr. Nicholas Yerkes, MD, Thoracic Surgery, and the moderator was Thurgood Brooks, of the Martin Luther King Center in Rock Island, IL. Key topics discussed included: lung cancer/lung disease; impact on body, life, family, and friends; prevention strategies and lung screening options; and steps a person can take to stay healthy.
